What Sūrat Yūnus is about
Sūrat Yūnus has 109 āyāt and lies in the eleventh juzʼ. It opens with people’s surprise that a man from among them was sent to warn them (10:2). It points to the sun and the moon, the night and the day, as signs for those who are mindful (10:5–6).
The sūrah is named after the prophet Yūnus (Jonah), whose people believed in time and were spared (10:98). It tells of Nūḥ (Noah), and of Mūsā (Moses) and Firʿawn (Pharaoh), who declared his faith only as he drowned (10:90). It says that Allah’s friends have no fear and no grief (10:62), and that people cannot be forced into faith (10:99).
- Āyāt 1–20
A man sent to warn
People wonder that a man from among them brings revelation. Allah created the heavens and the earth in six days, and made the sun a radiance and the moon a light (10:5). When harm touches a person he calls on Allah, then forgets once it is lifted (10:12). The Prophet cannot change the Qurʼān on his own (10:15).
- Āyāt 21–70
Signs at sea, and the friends of Allah
People pray sincerely in a storm at sea, then return to wrongdoing once safe (10:22–23). This world is like rain that brings up plants, which are then cut down (10:24). Allah calls to the home of peace (10:25). No one can produce a sūrah like this (10:38). Allah’s friends have no fear and no grief (10:62).
- Āyāt 71–93
Nūḥ, Mūsā and Firʿawn
Nūḥ is rejected and saved in the ship. Mūsā and Hārūn (Aaron) bring signs to Firʿawn, who calls them magic. The Children of Israel cross the sea, and Firʿawn declares belief only as he drowns. His body is kept as a sign for those after him (10:92).
- Āyāt 94–109
The people of Yūnus
If in doubt, ask those who read the Book before. No town believed in time to be helped by it, except the people of Yūnus (10:98). Belief comes by Allah’s leave, and people cannot be forced into it (10:99–100). The Prophet is told to follow what is revealed and be patient (10:109).
