What Sūrat at-Tawbah is about
Sūrat at-Tawbah has 129 āyāt in the tenth and eleventh juzʼ. In the muṣḥaf it is the one sūrah that does not open with “In the name of Allah”. It begins with a declaration that Allah and His Messenger are free of obligations to the polytheists, with four months to travel freely, while treaties that were kept are honoured to their term (9:1–4).
Much of the sūrah is about a call to go out and those who held back. It exposes the hypocrites and their excuses, recalls Ḥunayn (9:25), and names who may receive charity (9:60). Its name, “repentance”, comes from Allah turning in forgiveness to the believers and to three who had stayed behind (9:117–118). It closes with a Messenger from among the people, who cares for them (9:128–129).
- Āyāt 1–16
A declaration and its terms
Allah and His Messenger declare themselves free of obligations to the polytheists, who are given four months of safe travel. Treaties that were kept are honoured. Anyone who asks for protection is to be protected so he can hear Allah’s words, then taken to safety (9:6).
- Āyāt 17–37
Masjids, Ḥunayn and the sacred months
Allah’s masjids are tended by those who believe in Him and the Last Day (9:18). Love of family, wealth or homes must not come before Allah and His Messenger (9:24). At Ḥunayn the believers’ numbers did not help them until Allah sent down His calm (9:25–26). There are twelve months with Allah, four of them sacred (9:36).
- Āyāt 38–72
Going out, and those who stayed behind
Believers are told to go out, light or heavy (9:41), and reminded that Allah helped the Prophet when he was the second of two in the cave (9:40). The hypocrites ask leave with excuses and mock the believers. Charity goes to eight kinds of people (9:60). Believing men and women are allies of one another (9:71).
- Āyāt 73–110
Hypocrites, Bedouins and the first believers
The Prophet is told not to pray over hypocrites who die (9:84). Some Bedouins are hard in disbelief, and some believe and spend for Allah. Allah is pleased with the first of the emigrants and the helpers (9:100). Charity purifies those who give it (9:103). A masjid built to cause harm must not be prayed in (9:107–108).
- Āyāt 111–129
A trade with Allah, and repentance
Allah has bought from the believers their lives and wealth in return for the Garden (9:111). Ibrāhīm’s prayer for his father is explained (9:114). Allah forgives three who stayed behind once the earth felt narrow to them (9:118). Believers are told to be with the truthful (9:119). A Messenger has come who grieves at their hardship (9:128).
