What Sūrat Hūd is about
Sūrat Hūd has 123 āyāt in the eleventh and twelfth juzʼ. It opens with a Book whose āyāt are made precise, calling people to worship Allah alone and to seek His forgiveness (11:1–3). Every creature on earth has its provision from Allah (11:6).
Most of the sūrah tells of prophets and their peoples: Nūḥ (Noah) and the flood, Hūd and ʿĀd, Ṣāliḥ and Thamūd, Ibrāhīm’s guests, Lūṭ (Lot), Shuʿayb and Mūsā (Moses). Each is rejected, and each is saved with those who believe. These stories are told to make the Prophet’s heart firm (11:120), and he is told to stand firm as he was commanded (11:112).
- Āyāt 1–24
A Book made precise
The āyāt are made precise and explained. Seek your Lord’s forgiveness and turn to Him. Allah knows every creature’s dwelling and resting place (11:6). Those who doubt are challenged to bring ten sūrahs like it (11:13). The two groups are like the blind and deaf and the seeing and hearing (11:24).
- Āyāt 25–49
Nūḥ and the flood
Nūḥ warns his people, who mock him as he builds the ship (11:38). The water rises, and his son refuses to board and is drowned (11:42–43). Nūḥ pleads for him and is told the son was not of his family (11:46). This is news of the unseen (11:49).
- Āyāt 50–60
Hūd and ʿĀd
Hūd calls the people of ʿĀd to worship Allah and seek forgiveness, promising rain and strength. They refuse to leave their gods. Hūd puts his trust in Allah, who holds every creature by its forelock (11:56). ʿĀd are followed by a curse in this world and on the Day.
- Āyāt 61–68
Ṣāliḥ and Thamūd
Ṣāliḥ reminds Thamūd that Allah made them from the earth and settled them in it. A she-camel is given as a sign, and they hamstring it. After three days a blast seizes them, and Ṣāliḥ and the believers are saved.
- Āyāt 69–83
Ibrāhīm’s guests and Lūṭ
Messengers come to Ibrāhīm (Abraham). His wife laughs, and is given news of Isḥāq (Isaac) and after him Yaʿqūb (Jacob) (11:71). Ibrāhīm pleads for Lūṭ’s people. The messengers tell Lūṭ to leave by night, and the town is overturned and rained on with stones (11:82).
- Āyāt 84–95
Shuʿayb and Madyan
Shuʿayb tells Madyan to give full measure and weight and not to cheat people of their things. They mock his prayer and threaten to stone him. He says he wants only to set things right as far as he can (11:88). The blast seizes them.
- Āyāt 96–123
Mūsā, and stand firm
Mūsā is sent to Firʿawn (Pharaoh), who will lead his people into the Fire (11:98). These are the stories of towns, some still standing and some mown down. The Prophet is told to stand firm as commanded (11:112) and to pray at both ends of the day, for good deeds remove bad ones (11:114). The stories make his heart firm (11:120).
