Juzʼ 23445Ḥizb 45

What Sūrat Yā-Sīn is about

Sūrat Yā-Sīn has 83 āyāt in the twenty-second and twenty-third juzʼ. It opens with an oath by the wise Qurʼān that the Prophet is one of the messengers, on a straight path (36:2–4). It tells of a town that rejected its messengers, and of a man who came running from the far end of the city to tell his people to follow them (36:13–27).

The sūrah then points to signs: the dead earth brought to life, the night stripped from the day, the sun running to its resting place, the moon through its stages, and the laden ship (36:33–44). It describes the trumpet, the people of the Garden, and mouths sealed while hands and feet bear witness (36:51–65). It ends with the One who made the bones the first time giving them life again (36:78–79), whose command is only “Be”, and it is (36:82).

  1. Āyāt 1–12

A messenger on a straight path

By the wise Qurʼān, the Prophet is one of the messengers. He is sent to warn a people whose forefathers were not warned. The warning helps whoever follows the reminder and fears the Most Merciful unseen (36:11). Allah gives life to the dead and records everything in a clear register (36:12).

  2. Āyāt 13–32

The town and the man who came running

Two messengers are sent to a town, then a third, and the people reject them as mere humans. A man comes running from the far end of the city: follow the messengers. He is told to enter the Garden and wishes his people knew (36:26–27). A single blast ends them (36:29).

  3. Āyāt 33–47

Signs in earth, sky and sea

The dead earth is brought to life with grain, palms and vines. Night is stripped from the day, the sun runs to its resting place, and the moon passes through its stages until it is like an old date stalk. Each floats in its orbit (36:40). The laden ship is a sign too (36:41).

  4. Āyāt 48–68

    The trumpet and the Garden

The trumpet is blown, and people hurry from their graves to their Lord (36:51). The people of the Garden are busy in joy, with peace as a word from a Merciful Lord (36:58). The guilty are told to stand apart. On that Day mouths are sealed, and hands and feet bear witness (36:65).

  5. Āyāt 69–83

    Be, and it is

The Prophet was not taught poetry; this is a reminder and a clear Qurʼān. The human, made from a drop, argues and asks who will give life to rotten bones. The One who made them the first time will give them life (36:79). When He wills a thing, His command is only “Be”, and it is (36:82).
