What Sūrat aṣ-Ṣāffāt is about
Sūrat aṣ-Ṣāffāt has 182 āyāt in the twenty-third juzʼ. It opens with an oath by those ranged in rows, that your God is One (37:1–4). It describes the deniers on the Day, questioning one another, and the sincere servants of Allah in gardens of bliss (37:19–61).
It then tells of Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm (Abraham), Mūsā and Hārūn, Ilyās (Elijah), Lūṭ and Yūnus (Jonah). Ibrāhīm sees in a dream that he is sacrificing his son, both submit, and the son is ransomed with a great sacrifice (37:102–107). The sūrah ends with peace on the messengers and praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds (37:181–182).
- Āyāt 1–10
Those ranged in rows
By those ranged in rows, those who drive and those who recite: your God is One, Lord of the heavens, the earth and the easts (37:4–5). The nearest sky is adorned with stars and guarded from every rebellious devil.
- Āyāt 11–74
The Day of Judgement
The deniers mock the raising of the dead. On the Day they are gathered with what they worshipped and blame one another. Allah’s sincere servants sit facing one another in gardens of bliss. One looks and sees his old companion in the Fire (37:55). The tree of Zaqqūm grows at the bottom of Hell (37:62–64).
- Āyāt 75–82
Nūḥ
Nūḥ called on Allah, and Allah answered him. He and his family were saved from the great distress, and his descendants remained. Peace be upon Nūḥ among the worlds (37:79).
- Āyāt 83–113
Ibrāhīm and the sacrifice
Ibrāhīm comes to his Lord with a sound heart and breaks his people’s idols, and their plot against him fails (37:97–98). He asks for a righteous son and is given a forbearing boy. In a dream he sees himself sacrificing him, and both submit. Allah ransoms the boy with a great sacrifice (37:107), and gives Ibrāhīm news of Isḥāq (37:112).
- Āyāt 114–148
Mūsā, Hārūn, Ilyās, Lūṭ and Yūnus
Mūsā and Hārūn are given the clear Book. Ilyās asks his people why they call on Baʿl. Lūṭ (Lot) and his family are saved, except an old woman. Yūnus flees to the laden ship, is swallowed by the whale, glorifies Allah, and is cast onto open land. He is sent to a hundred thousand or more (37:147).
- Āyāt 149–182
Glory to your Lord
The idolaters claim daughters for Allah. The angels say: we stand in rows and glorify (37:165–166). Allah’s word has gone before that His messengers will be helped (37:171–172). Glory be to your Lord, above what they describe, and peace be upon the messengers (37:180–181).
