What Sūrat Ṣād is about
Sūrat Ṣād has 88 āyāt in the twenty-third juzʼ. It opens with an oath by the Qurʼān full of reminder (38:1), and with the disbelievers’ wonder that a warner came from among them, and that he made the gods one God (38:4–5).
It remembers Dāwūd (David), who was tested by two disputants and bowed down in repentance (38:21–25), Sulaymān (Solomon) and his kingdom (38:30–40), and Ayyūb (Job), who was patient and called on his Lord (38:41–44). It ends with the creation of Ādam, Iblīs’s refusal to bow, and his claim to be better because he was made from fire (38:71–85).
- Āyāt 1–16
A warner from among them
By the Qurʼān full of reminder, the disbelievers are in pride and opposition. They wonder that a warner came from among them, and that he made the gods one God (38:5). Many generations before them cried out when it was too late.
- Āyāt 17–26
Dāwūd
The Prophet is told to be patient and remember Dāwūd, who often turned to Allah. The mountains and birds glorified with him. Two disputants climb into his prayer chamber over ninety-nine ewes and one. Dāwūd sees he was tested, asks forgiveness and bows down (38:24). He is made a successor on the earth and told to judge with truth (38:26).
- Āyāt 27–40
Sulaymān
The heavens and the earth were not made in vain. This blessed Book is sent so people reflect on its āyāt (38:29). Sulaymān, an excellent servant who often turned to Allah, is tested (38:30–34). He asks for a kingdom no one after him would have, and is given the wind and the jinn (38:35–38).
- Āyāt 41–64
Ayyūb, and the end of each group
Ayyūb (Job) calls out that Shayṭān has touched him with hardship. He is told to strike the ground with his foot, finds water to wash and drink, and his family is restored (38:42–43). Ibrāhīm, Isḥāq, Yaʿqūb, Ismāʿīl, al-Yasaʿ and Dhū al-Kifl are remembered. Gardens wait for the mindful, and the Fire for the transgressors.
- Āyāt 65–88
Ādam and Iblīs
The Prophet is only a warner. Allah creates a human from clay and tells the angels to bow. Iblīs refuses, saying he is better, made from fire (38:76). He is given respite and vows to mislead all except Allah’s sincere servants (38:82–83). The Qurʼān is a reminder to the worlds (38:87).
