What Sūrat az-Zumar is about
Sūrat az-Zumar has 75 āyāt in the twenty-third and twenty-fourth juzʼ. It opens with the Book sent down in truth, and a call to worship Allah with sincere devotion (39:2). It asks whether those who know and those who do not know are equal (39:9).
It calls on Allah’s servants who have wronged themselves not to despair of His mercy, for He forgives all sins (39:53). It ends with the Day when the earth shines with its Lord’s light, and people are driven in groups, some to Hell and some to the Garden (39:69–73), while the angels surround the Throne in praise (39:75).
- Āyāt 1–9
Sincere devotion
The Book is sent down in truth, so worship Allah sincerely. Some take protectors, saying they only bring them nearer to Allah (39:3). He created people from one soul, in three layers of darkness in the womb (39:6). Those who know and those who do not are not equal (39:9).
- Āyāt 10–20
Those who hear and follow the best
The patient are paid their reward without measure (39:10). The Prophet is commanded to be the first to submit. The true losers lose themselves and their families on the Day (39:15). Good news is for those who listen to speech and follow the best of it (39:18).
- Āyāt 21–35
The best of speech
Allah sends rain and grows crops, which then turn yellow. He sent down the best speech, a Book alike in its parts and often repeated, at which the skins of those who fear their Lord shiver (39:23). A man owned by quarrelling partners is not like one owned by one master (39:29). The Prophet will die, and they will die (39:30).
- Āyāt 36–52
Allah is enough for His servant
Allah is enough for His servant (39:36). Ask who created the heavens and the earth, and they will say Allah. Allah takes souls at death, and in sleep (39:42). When Allah alone is mentioned the hearts of deniers shrink. A person rescued from harm says he was given it for his knowledge (39:49).
- Āyāt 53–63
Do not despair of Allah’s mercy
Allah’s servants who have wronged themselves must not despair of His mercy, for He forgives all sins (39:53). Turn to your Lord and submit before punishment comes, before a soul says: alas for how I neglected my duty to Allah (39:56). Allah is the Creator and Guardian of all things (39:62).
- Āyāt 64–75
Driven in groups
The Prophet will not worship other than Allah. On the Day the earth is in His grip and the heavens folded in His right hand (39:67). The trumpet is blown, and the earth shines with its Lord’s light. The deniers are driven to Hell in groups, and the mindful to the Garden in groups, welcomed with peace (39:71–73).
