What Sūrat Sabaʾ is about
Sūrat Sabaʾ has 54 āyāt in the twenty-second juzʼ. It opens in praise of Allah, who owns all in the heavens and the earth and knows what enters the earth and what comes out of it (34:1–2). Not an atom’s weight is hidden from Him (34:3).
It tells of Dāwūd (David), with whom the mountains and birds glorified Allah, and of Sulaymān (Solomon), whose death went unnoticed until a creature of the earth ate through his staff (34:10–14). It is named after the people of Sabaʾ, who had two gardens and turned away, until the flood of al-ʿArim swept them away (34:15–17). It calls people to stand for Allah in pairs or alone and reflect (34:46).
- Āyāt 1–9
Nothing is hidden from Him
All praise is Allah’s, in this world and the next. He knows what enters the earth and what leaves it, what comes down from the sky and what goes up. The deniers say the Hour will not come; it will, and not an atom’s weight escapes Him (34:3).
- Āyāt 10–14
Dāwūd and Sulaymān
The mountains and birds echo Dāwūd’s praise, and iron is softened for him to make coats of mail. Sulaymān is given the wind, a spring of molten copper and jinn who work for him. When he dies, only a creature eating his staff shows it, and the jinn learn they did not know the unseen (34:14).
- Āyāt 15–21
The two gardens of Sabaʾ
Sabaʾ had two gardens, right and left: eat and be grateful. They turned away, and the flood of al-ʿArim changed their gardens to bitter fruit and tamarisk. Their journeys were made easy, yet they asked for longer ones, and became tales (34:19). Iblīs found his opinion of them true (34:20).
- Āyāt 22–30
Sent to all people
Those called upon besides Allah own not an atom’s weight. No intercession helps except for whom He allows (34:23). Allah is the One who provides from the heavens and the earth (34:24). The Prophet was sent to all people, to give good news and to warn (34:28).
- Āyāt 31–54
Wealth that does not bring near
On the Day, the weak and the proud blame each other. Wealth and children do not bring anyone near to Allah; only faith and good deeds do (34:37). Stand for Allah in pairs or alone and reflect: your companion is not mad (34:46). The truth has come (34:49).
