What Sūrat al-Aḥzāb is about
Sūrat al-Aḥzāb has 73 āyāt in the twenty-first and twenty-second juzʼ. It opens by telling the Prophet to be mindful of Allah and follow what is revealed to him (33:1–2). It is named after the allied armies that came against the believers from above and below, when eyes wavered and hearts rose to the throats (33:9–22).
The sūrah gives rulings for the Prophet’s household and the believers: adopted sons are called by their fathers’ names (33:4–5), and Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets (33:40). It says Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet (33:56), and ends with the trust that the heavens, the earth and the mountains declined and the human took on (33:72).
- Āyāt 1–8
The Prophet and the believers
The Prophet is told to rely on Allah alone. Allah has not put two hearts in one chest. Adopted sons are not sons by birth, so call them by their fathers (33:4–5). The Prophet is closer to the believers than they are to themselves, and his wives are their mothers (33:6).
- Āyāt 9–27
The allied armies
Armies came from above and below, and some asked leave, saying their homes were exposed (33:13). In the Messenger is a good example (33:21). When the believers saw the allies they said: this is what Allah and His Messenger promised us (33:22). Some fulfilled their pledge to Allah (33:23). Allah turned the armies back in their rage and spared the believers the fighting (33:25).
- Āyāt 28–35
The Prophet’s wives, and believers rewarded
The Prophet’s wives are given a choice between this world and Allah, His Messenger and the Hereafter (33:28–29). They are not like other women, and are told how to speak and live. Believing men and women who are devout, truthful, patient, humble, charitable, fasting, chaste and remember Allah much are promised forgiveness and a great reward (33:35).
- Āyāt 36–48
The seal of the prophets
When Allah and His Messenger decide a matter, believers have no other choice (33:36). The Prophet marries the former wife of Zayd, so that the wives of adopted sons are not forbidden (33:37). Muḥammad is not the father of any of your men; he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets (33:40). Remember Allah often (33:41).
- Āyāt 49–62
Rulings for the household
Rulings are given on divorce before consummation and on whom the Prophet may marry. Believers enter the Prophet’s house only when invited, and ask his wives from behind a screen (33:53). Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet, so believers should too (33:56). Believing women are told to draw their outer garments over themselves (33:59).
- Āyāt 63–73
The trust
People ask about the Hour, and only Allah knows it. In the Fire, the misled blame their leaders (33:67). Believers are told to be mindful of Allah and speak straight words (33:70). The trust was offered to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, and they declined it, and the human took it on (33:72).
