What Sūrat Luqmān is about
Sūrat Luqmān has 34 āyāt in the twenty-first juzʼ. It opens with the āyāt of the wise Book, guidance and mercy for those who do good (31:2–3). Allah created the heavens without visible pillars, and challenges people to show what anything besides Him has created (31:10–11).
It is named after Luqmān, whom Allah gave wisdom, and it records his advice to his son: do not set up partners with Allah, for that is a great wrong (31:13). Even a deed the weight of a mustard seed will be brought out (31:16). Pray, enjoin good and be patient, walk modestly and lower your voice (31:17–19). The sūrah ends with what lies with Allah alone, among it the knowledge of the Hour (31:34).
- Āyāt 1–11
The wise Book and the Creator
The Book is guidance for those who do good, who pray, pay zakāh and are certain of the Hereafter. Some buy idle talk to lead others astray (31:6). Allah raised the heavens without visible pillars, set mountains firm, and sends the rain. This is His creation; show what others have created (31:11).
- Āyāt 12–19
Luqmān’s advice to his son
Allah gave Luqmān wisdom: be grateful. Luqmān tells his son not to set up partners with Allah. Be grateful to parents, but do not obey them in shirk (31:14–15). Even a mustard seed’s weight is brought out by Allah. Pray, enjoin good, be patient, do not turn your cheek in pride, walk modestly and lower your voice.
- Āyāt 20–34
If the trees were pens
Allah has made what is in the heavens and earth of service to people. If every tree were a pen and the sea ink, Allah’s words would not run out (31:27). Ships sail by His favour. Fear a Day when no parent can help a child (31:33). Knowledge of the Hour is with Allah, and no soul knows in what land it will die (31:34).
