What Sūrat ar-Rūm is about
Sūrat ar-Rūm has 60 āyāt in the twenty-first juzʼ. It opens with a promise: the Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, and after their defeat they will win within a few years (30:2–4). On that day the believers will rejoice in Allah’s help (30:4–5).
Much of the sūrah is a run of signs, each opening with “among His signs”: people made from dust, spouses with love and mercy between them (30:21), different languages and colours, sleep, lightning and rain (30:20–25). It calls people to the nature Allah made them with (30:30), and ends by telling the Prophet to be patient, for Allah’s promise is true (30:60).
- Āyāt 1–10
The Romans, and a promise
The Romans have been defeated, and within a few years they will win. The matter belongs to Allah before and after. People know the surface of this world’s life and are heedless of the Hereafter (30:7). Travel and see the end of those before, who were stronger.
- Āyāt 11–27
Among His signs
Allah begins creation and repeats it. Glorify Him evening and morning. Among His signs: He made you from dust, made spouses for you to find rest in, with love and mercy between you (30:21), and gave you different languages and colours. Sleep, lightning, rain, and the heavens and earth standing by His command are signs too.
- Āyāt 28–45
The nature Allah made
A parable asks whether people share their wealth with their slaves as equals. Turn your face to the religion, upright, the nature Allah made people with (30:30). Do not split into sects. Give relatives, the poor and the traveller their due. Usury does not grow with Allah, but zakāh does (30:39). Corruption appears on land and sea from what people’s hands earn (30:41).
- Āyāt 46–60
Look at the marks of His mercy
Allah sends the winds with good news, and the rain revives the dead earth: look at the marks of His mercy (30:50). The Prophet cannot make the dead hear. Allah made people weak, then strong, then weak and grey again (30:54). Be patient, for Allah’s promise is true (30:60).
