What Sūrat as-Sajdah is about

Sūrat as-Sajdah has 30 āyāt in the twenty-first juzʼ. It opens by saying the Book is sent down, without doubt, from the Lord of the worlds (32:2). Allah created the heavens and the earth in six days, began the human from clay, then breathed into him of His spirit and gave hearing, sight and hearts (32:4–9).

It is named after those who fall down in prostration when they are reminded of Allah’s āyāt (32:15). Their sides leave their beds as they call on their Lord in fear and hope (32:16), and no soul knows what joy is kept hidden for them (32:17). The sūrah says a believer is not like one who defies (32:18), and ends by telling the Prophet to turn away and wait (32:30).

  1. Āyāt 1–9

    Created from clay

The Book is from the Lord of the worlds. Allah created the heavens and the earth in six days, and directs the affair from the heaven to the earth. He began the human from clay, made his descendants from a humble fluid, and breathed into him of His spirit.

  2. Āyāt 10–14

When they stand before their Lord

The deniers ask how they will be made new after vanishing into the earth. The angel of death will take them (32:11). Then the guilty will hang their heads before their Lord and beg to be sent back to do good (32:12).

  3. Āyāt 15–22

    Those who prostrate

Those who believe fall down in prostration when reminded, and are not proud. They leave their beds to call on their Lord in fear and hope, and spend from what they are given. No soul knows the joy hidden for them (32:17). A believer and one who defies are not equal (32:18).

  4. Āyāt 23–30

    Leaders who were patient

Mūsā (Moses) was given the Book. Leaders were made from among the Children of Israel, guiding by Allah’s command, when they were patient and certain (32:24). Water is driven to barren land to grow crops (32:27). They ask when the decision will come; turn away and wait (32:30).
