What Sūrat al-Anfāl is about
Sūrat al-Anfāl has 75 āyāt in the ninth and tenth juzʼ. It opens with a question about the spoils of war, which give the sūrah its name, and answers that they belong to Allah and the Messenger (8:1). True believers are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned (8:2).
The sūrah looks back on a battle the believers had not planned for, on the day the two armies met (8:41–42). Allah sent angels in support (8:9) and says it was He who threw when the Prophet threw (8:17). It teaches steadiness and unity, readiness, and peace when the enemy inclines to it (8:61), and how the emigrants and those who sheltered them stand by one another (8:72).
- Āyāt 1–4
The spoils, and true believers
When asked about the spoils, the Prophet is told they belong to Allah and the Messenger. True believers grow in faith when they hear the āyāt, rely on their Lord, pray and spend from what they are given.
- Āyāt 5–29
Help from Allah
Some believers disliked going out, but Allah promised them one of two groups (8:7). He answered their call with angels, and sent sleep to calm them and rain (8:9–11). The victory was His doing (8:17). Believers must answer Allah and the Messenger when called to what gives them life (8:24), and not betray their trusts (8:27).
- Āyāt 30–40
The plotters, and their spending
The disbelievers plotted to hold, kill or drive out the Prophet, and Allah is the best of planners (8:30). They spend their wealth to turn people from Allah’s path, and it will become their regret (8:36). If they stop, the past is forgiven (8:38).
- Āyāt 41–54
The day the two armies met
A fifth of the spoils is for Allah, the Messenger, relatives, orphans, the poor and the traveller (8:41). Allah made each side see the other as few, so that His decree would come about (8:44). Believers must stand firm, remember Allah and not dispute (8:45–46). Shayṭān made the enemy’s deeds look fair, then abandoned them (8:48).
- Āyāt 55–66
Treaties, readiness and peace
Those who break their treaties again and again are described. Believers must prepare whatever strength they can (8:60), and incline to peace if the enemy does (8:61). Allah joined their hearts, which all the wealth on earth could not have done (8:63). Twenty patient believers can overcome two hundred (8:65).
- Āyāt 67–75
Captives, emigrants and helpers
Rulings on captives are given, and they are told that if Allah finds good in their hearts He will give them better than what was taken (8:70). The believers who emigrated and those who sheltered and helped them are allies of one another (8:72–74).
