What Sūrat aṣ-Ṣaff is about
Sūrat aṣ-Ṣaff has 14 āyāt in the twenty-eighth juzʼ. It opens with everything glorifying Allah, then asks the believers why they say what they do not do; it is hateful to Allah (61:2–3). It is named after the rank in which those who strive for Allah stand, like a solid structure (61:4).
The sūrah recalls Mūsā (Moses) and ʿĪsā (Jesus), who brought good news of a messenger to come after him named Aḥmad (61:6). The deniers want to put out Allah’s light with their mouths, but He will complete it (61:8). It offers a trade that saves from punishment, faith and striving (61:10–11), and ends by calling the believers to be helpers of Allah, as the disciples were (61:14).
- Āyāt 1–4
Say what you do
Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah. Believers are asked why they say what they do not do; it is most hateful to Allah (61:3). Allah loves those who strive in His way in ranks, like a solid structure (61:4).
- Āyāt 5–9
Mūsā, ʿĪsā and Allah’s light
Mūsā asks his people why they hurt him when they know he is Allah’s messenger. ʿĪsā tells the Children of Israel he confirms the Tawrāh and brings news of a messenger named Aḥmad (61:6). They want to put out Allah’s light with their mouths, but Allah will complete His light (61:8).
- Āyāt 10–14
A trade that saves
The believers are offered a trade that saves from a painful punishment: believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive with wealth and self (61:10–11). The reward is forgiveness, gardens and dwellings in Gardens of ʿAdn, help from Allah and a near victory. Be helpers of Allah, as the disciples of ʿĪsā were (61:14).
