What Sūrat al-Jumuʿah is about
Sūrat al-Jumuʿah has 11 āyāt in the twenty-eighth juzʼ. It opens with everything glorifying Allah, the King, the Holy (62:1). Allah sent among the unlettered a messenger from among them, who recites His āyāt to them, purifies them and teaches them the Book and wisdom (62:2).
It warns that those given the Tawrāh who did not carry it out are like a donkey carrying books (62:5). It is named after Friday: when the call to prayer is made on Friday, hurry to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade, then spread through the land and seek His bounty (62:9–10). What is with Allah is better than amusement or trade (62:11).
- Āyāt 1–8
A messenger among the unlettered
Allah sent among the unlettered a messenger from among them, to recite His āyāt, purify them and teach them the Book and wisdom, and others who have not yet joined them (62:2–3). Those who carried the Tawrāh and did not uphold it are like a donkey carrying books (62:5). The death people flee from will meet them (62:8).
- Āyāt 9–11
The Friday prayer
When the call to prayer is made on Friday, hurry to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade (62:9). When the prayer is over, spread through the land and seek Allah’s bounty, remembering Him much (62:10). Some left the Prophet standing when they saw trade or amusement, but what is with Allah is better (62:11).
