What Sūrat al-Mumtaḥanah is about

Sūrat al-Mumtaḥanah has 13 āyāt in the twenty-eighth juzʼ. It opens by telling the believers not to take Allah’s enemies and theirs as allies, showing them love, when they drove out the Messenger and the believers (60:1). Ibrāhīm (Abraham) and those with him are given as a good example (60:4).

It also says Allah does not forbid kindness and justice towards those who did not fight the believers over religion or drive them from their homes (60:8). It is named after the testing of believing women who came as emigrants: if they are found to be believers, they are not sent back (60:10). It ends with the pledge of believing women (60:12).

  1. Āyāt 1–3

Do not take My enemies as allies

Believers must not take Allah’s enemies and their own as allies, showing them affection, when they drove out the Messenger and the believers for believing in Allah. On the Day of Resurrection, relatives and children will not help them (60:3).

  2. Āyāt 4–9

    The example of Ibrāhīm

Ibrāhīm and those with him told their people they were free of them and of what they worshipped besides Allah (60:4). Allah may yet put love between the believers and their enemies (60:7). He does not forbid kindness and justice to those who did not fight them over religion or drive them out (60:8).

  3. Āyāt 10–13

    The women who emigrated

When believing women come as emigrants, test them; Allah knows their faith best. If they are believers, do not return them to the disbelievers (60:10). Rulings on dowries follow. The Prophet takes the pledge of believing women not to set up partners with Allah, steal or commit adultery (60:12).
