What Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt is about
Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt has 69 āyāt in the twentieth and twenty-first juzʼ. It opens by asking whether people think they will be left to say “we believe” and not be tested (29:2). Those before them were tested, so that Allah would make known who is truthful (29:3).
It tells of Nūḥ, who lived among his people a thousand years less fifty (29:14), of Ibrāhīm (Abraham) and Lūṭ, and of peoples who were destroyed. It is named after the spider, whose house is the frailest of houses, like the protectors people take besides Allah (29:41). The sūrah ends with a promise: those who strive for Allah will be guided to His ways (29:69).
- Āyāt 1–13
Faith will be tested
People will not be left to say they believe without being tested. Be good to your parents, but do not obey them if they push you to set up partners with Allah (29:8). Some say they believe, but when they are harmed for Allah they treat people’s harm like Allah’s punishment (29:10).
- Āyāt 14–40
Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Lūṭ and others
Nūḥ stays among his people for nine hundred and fifty years. Ibrāhīm calls his people to worship Allah and is saved from the fire, and Lūṭ believes in him (29:24–26). Lūṭ’s people are punished. Madyan, ʿĀd, Thamūd, Qārūn, Firʿawn and Hāmān are each seized for their sins (29:40).
- Āyāt 41–45
The spider’s house
Those who take protectors besides Allah are like the spider that builds a house, and the frailest of houses is the spider’s (29:41). Recite the Book and keep up the prayer, for prayer keeps one from indecency and wrong, and the remembrance of Allah is greater (29:45).
- Āyāt 46–55
The People of the Book, and the signs
Argue with the People of the Book only in the best way, and say: our God and your God is One (29:46). The Prophet did not read any book or write one before this (29:48). The Qurʼān is clear signs in the hearts of those given knowledge (29:49). They ask for signs, though the Book recited to them is enough (29:51).
- Āyāt 56–69
Allah’s earth is wide
Allah’s earth is wide, so worship Him (29:56). Every soul will taste death (29:57). Many creatures do not carry their provision; Allah provides for them and for you (29:60). This world is play and amusement, and the home of the Hereafter is the true life (29:64). Those who strive for Allah will be guided to His ways (29:69).
