What Sūrat al-Qalam is about

Sūrat al-Qalam has 52 āyāt in the twenty-ninth juzʼ. It opens with the letter Nūn and an oath by the pen and what is written: by his Lord’s grace the Prophet is not mad (68:1–2). His reward is unending, and he is of great character (68:3–4).

The sūrah warns against obeying the deniers, and describes one who swears much and slanders, proud because of his wealth and sons (68:10–15). It tells of the owners of a garden who planned to harvest it without the poor, and found it destroyed overnight (68:17–33). It ends by telling the Prophet to be patient and not to be like the companion of the whale (68:48).

  1. Āyāt 1–16

    By the pen

By the pen and what they write, the Prophet is not mad, and he is of great character (68:4). Soon he and they will see which of them is truly mad (68:5–6). He must not obey the deniers, nor anyone who swears much, slanders, blocks good and is cruel, because he has wealth and sons (68:10–14).

  2. Āyāt 17–33

    The owners of the garden

The owners of a garden swore to harvest it in the morning, without saying “if Allah wills”. While they slept, it was struck. They set off whispering that no poor person should enter it that day. Finding it ruined, they admitted they had done wrong and turned to their Lord (68:29–32). The punishment of the Hereafter is greater (68:33).

  3. Āyāt 34–47

Shall the submitting be like the guilty?

The mindful have gardens of bliss with their Lord. Shall Allah treat those who submit like the guilty (68:35)? Do the deniers have a book, or partners to back them? On the Day the shin is uncovered, they are called to prostrate and cannot (68:42).

  4. Āyāt 48–52

    The companion of the whale

Be patient for your Lord’s decision, and do not be like the companion of the whale, who called out in distress (68:48). Had his Lord’s grace not reached him, he would have been cast out in blame, but his Lord chose him. The Qurʼān is only a reminder to the worlds (68:52).
