What Sūrat al-Mulk is about

Sūrat al-Mulk opens the 29th juzʼ. It is named after its first āyah, which says that all sovereignty is in Allah’s hand (67:1). Its 30 āyāt ask the listener to look at what is in front of them: the sky, the earth, the birds and the water they drink.

The sūrah moves from what can be seen to what cannot. Death and life are created as a test of who does best (67:2). The earth is made easy to walk on and live from (67:15). Every provision could be held back (67:21). So the sūrah asks who else could protect or provide, and it ends with one question about water (67:30).

  1. Āyāt 1–4

    Sovereignty and a flawless creation

Allah holds all sovereignty. He created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds. He made seven heavens in layers, and no flaw can be found in them however often you look.

  2. Āyāt 5–11

    The warning that was heard

The nearest sky is adorned with lamps. Those who rejected the warning are asked by the keepers of Hell whether no warner came to them. They admit that if they had listened or reasoned, they would not be there.

  3. Āyāt 12–14

Those who fear their Lord unseen

They are promised forgiveness and a great reward. He knows what the heart conceals. Does He not know what He created?

  4. Āyāt 15–22

    Signs to look at

The earth is made easy to walk and to eat from. The birds above spread and fold their wings, and none holds them up but the Most Merciful. Then two people are set side by side: one stumbles on his face, the other walks upright on a straight path.

  5. Āyāt 23–30

Hearing, sight and a last question

Hearing, sight and hearts are His gift, yet little thanks is given. Only Allah knows the time of the promise. The sūrah closes with a question: if your water sank into the earth, who could bring you flowing water?
