What Sūrat al-Muzzammil is about

Sūrat al-Muzzammil has 20 āyāt in the twenty-ninth juzʼ. It opens by calling the Prophet as the one wrapped in his garment, which gives the sūrah its name, and tells him to stand in prayer at night, half of it or a little less or more, and to recite the Qurʼān slowly and clearly (73:1–4).

A weighty word will be sent down on him, and prayer at night is stronger and its words more upright (73:5–6). He is told to be patient with what the deniers say (73:10). The last āyah, much longer than the rest, lightens the night prayer: recite what is easy of the Qurʼān, for some are ill, some travel and some fight in Allah’s way (73:20).

  1. Āyāt 1–9

    Stand at night

The one wrapped in his garment is told to stand in prayer at night, all but a little, and to recite the Qurʼān slowly and clearly (73:4). A weighty word will be sent down on him. Rising at night is stronger for the heart and the words. Remember your Lord’s name and devote yourself to Him.

  2. Āyāt 10–19

A day that turns children grey

Be patient with what they say and leave them gracefully. Fetters and fire wait for the deniers who live in ease. On the Day the earth and mountains will shake (73:14). A messenger has been sent as one was sent to Firʿawn (Pharaoh). How will they guard against a Day that turns children grey (73:17)? This is a reminder.

  3. Āyāt 20

    Recite what is easy

Your Lord knows that the Prophet and some with him stand nearly two thirds of the night, or half, or a third. He knows they cannot keep exact count, so He has turned to them: recite what is easy of the Qurʼān. Some are ill, some travel, some fight. Pray, pay zakāh and lend Allah a good loan; whatever good you send ahead you will find with Allah.
