What Sūrat al-Jinn is about
Sūrat al-Jinn has 28 āyāt in the twenty-ninth juzʼ. The Prophet is told to say it was revealed to him that a group of jinn listened and said: we have heard a wonderful Qurʼān that guides to what is right, so we believe in it (72:1–2). They say their Lord has taken neither wife nor son (72:3).
In their own words the jinn describe how they once sought the sky and found it full of guards and flames (72:8–9), and that among them are those who submit and those who stray (72:14). The sūrah says the masjids belong to Allah, so call on no one with Him (72:18). Allah knows the unseen and shows it to no one except a messenger He chooses (72:26–27).
- Āyāt 1–15
The jinn who heard the Qurʼān
A group of jinn heard the Qurʼān and believed. They say their Lord has no wife or son, and that the foolish among them spoke falsely of Allah. Some humans sought refuge with jinn, which only added to their folly (72:6). The jinn found the sky full of guards and flames. Some of them submit and some stray (72:14).
- Āyāt 16–28
Call on no one with Allah
Had people kept to the way, Allah would have given them plenty of water (72:16). The masjids are for Allah, so call on no one with Him (72:18). The Prophet calls only on his Lord, and has no power to harm or guide them (72:20–21). Allah knows the unseen and reveals it only to a messenger He chooses (72:26–27).
