What Sūrat al-Muddaththir is about

Sūrat al-Muddaththir has 56 āyāt in the twenty-ninth juzʼ. It opens by calling the Prophet as the one wrapped in his cloak: arise and warn, magnify your Lord, purify your clothing and keep away from filth (74:1–5). Be patient for your Lord (74:7).

The sūrah describes a man given wealth and sons who thought, measured and frowned, then called the Qurʼān only the word of a human (74:11–25). He will enter Saqar, guarded by nineteen (74:26–30). People in it say they did not pray or feed the poor (74:43–44). It ends: this is a reminder, and Allah is worthy to be feared and to forgive (74:54–56).

  1. Āyāt 1–7

    Arise and warn

The one wrapped in his cloak is told to arise and warn. Magnify your Lord, purify your clothing, and keep away from filth. Do not give in order to receive more, and be patient for your Lord.

  2. Āyāt 8–31

    Saqar, and nineteen

When the trumpet sounds, it is a hard day for the deniers. A man given wealth and sons thought and plotted, frowned, turned away in pride, and called the Qurʼān magic and human speech (74:18–25). He will burn in Saqar, and over it are nineteen (74:30). Their number is a test, and only Allah knows the soldiers of your Lord (74:31).

  3. Āyāt 32–48

    What brought you to Saqar?

By the moon, the night and the dawn, it is one of the greatest things. Every soul is held by what it earned, except the people of the right (74:38–39). Asked what brought them to Saqar, the guilty say they did not pray, did not feed the poor, and denied the Day (74:42–46). No intercession helps them.

  4. Āyāt 49–56

    A reminder

Why do they turn from the reminder like frightened donkeys fleeing a lion (74:50–51)? Each of them wants scrolls of his own spread before him. It is a reminder, and whoever wills will remember. Allah is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive (74:56).
