What Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn is about
Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn has 11 āyāt in the twenty-eighth juzʼ. It opens with the hypocrites, who come to the Prophet and bear witness that he is Allah’s Messenger, while Allah bears witness that they are liars (63:1). They use their oaths as a shield (63:2), and their fine bodies are like propped-up timber (63:4).
The sūrah exposes their words: do not spend on those with the Messenger, and the mighty will drive out the weak (63:7–8). Honour belongs to Allah, His Messenger and the believers (63:8). It ends by telling the believers not to let wealth and children distract them from Allah’s remembrance, and to spend before death comes, when a soul will ask for a little more time (63:9–11).
- Āyāt 1–8
The hypocrites
The hypocrites testify that the Prophet is Allah’s Messenger, and Allah testifies that they lie. They hide behind oaths. Their bodies impress, but they are like propped-up timber (63:4). They say not to spend on the Messenger’s companions, and that the mighty will drive out the weak. Honour belongs to Allah, His Messenger and the believers (63:8).
- Āyāt 9–11
Spend before death comes
Do not let wealth and children distract you from the remembrance of Allah (63:9). Spend from what you are given before death comes and a person says: my Lord, if only You would delay me a little, I would give charity and be among the righteous (63:10). Allah does not delay a soul when its time has come (63:11).
