What Sūrat al-Ḥashr is about
Sūrat al-Ḥashr has 24 āyāt in the twenty-eighth juzʼ. It opens with everything glorifying Allah, then tells how some of the People of the Book were driven from their homes at the first gathering, though they thought their fortresses would protect them (59:2). It sets out how such gains are shared, so wealth does not circulate only among the rich (59:7).
The sūrah praises the emigrants, and those who welcomed them and preferred them over themselves even when in need (59:8–9). It says that if this Qurʼān were sent down on a mountain, the mountain would be humbled and split apart in awe of Allah (59:21). It ends with many of Allah’s beautiful names, from the King and the Holy to the Creator, the Maker and the Shaper (59:22–24).
- Āyāt 1–10
The first gathering
Allah drove some of the People of the Book from their homes at the first gathering, and their fortresses did not save them (59:2). What Allah gives His Messenger is for Allah, the Messenger, relatives, orphans, the poor and the traveller, so it does not circulate among the rich (59:7). Those who welcomed the emigrants preferred them over themselves even in need (59:9).
- Āyāt 11–17
False promises
The hypocrites promise their allies among the People of the Book that they will go out or fight with them, but they lie (59:11). They seem united, but their hearts are divided (59:14). They are like Shayṭān, who tells a person to disbelieve and then disowns him (59:16).
- Āyāt 18–24
If it came down on a mountain
Let every soul look at what it has sent ahead for tomorrow (59:18). Do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves (59:19). Had this Qurʼān come down on a mountain, it would humble itself and split in awe of Allah (59:21). He is Allah, the Knower of the seen and unseen, the Most Merciful, and His are the most beautiful names (59:22–24).
