What Sūrat Nūḥ is about
Sūrat Nūḥ has 28 āyāt in the twenty-ninth juzʼ. The whole sūrah is about the prophet Nūḥ (Noah). Allah sent him to warn his people before a painful punishment came: worship Allah, be mindful of Him and obey me, and He will forgive you (71:1–4).
Most of the sūrah is Nūḥ speaking to his Lord. He called his people by night and by day, openly and in private, and they put their fingers in their ears (71:5–9). He told them to ask forgiveness, and Allah would send rain, wealth, children, gardens and rivers (71:10–12). They clung to their idols and were drowned (71:23–25). The sūrah ends with his prayer for himself, his parents and the believers (71:28).
- Āyāt 1–4
Nūḥ is sent to warn
Allah sent Nūḥ to his people to warn them before a painful punishment. He tells them to worship Allah, be mindful of Him and obey him. Allah will forgive their sins and give them time until a set term.
- Āyāt 5–20
By night and by day
Nūḥ tells his Lord he called his people by night and day, and they only ran further, put their fingers in their ears and covered themselves with their garments. He said: ask your Lord’s forgiveness, and He will send rain, wealth, children, gardens and rivers (71:10–12). Allah created you in stages, made the moon a light and the sun a lamp (71:14–16).
- Āyāt 21–28
Nūḥ’s last prayer
His people followed those whose wealth only added to their loss, and told one another not to abandon Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq and Nasr (71:23). For their sins they were drowned. Nūḥ asks forgiveness for himself, his parents, whoever enters his house believing, and all believing men and women (71:28).
