What Sūrat al-Jāthiyah is about
Sūrat al-Jāthiyah has 37 āyāt in the twenty-fifth juzʼ. It opens with signs in the heavens and the earth, in the creation of people and animals, in night and day, rain and the turning of the winds (45:3–5). It asks in what speech they will believe, if not in Allah and His āyāt (45:6).
Allah has made the sea and all in the heavens and the earth of service to people (45:12–13). The sūrah answers those who say only time destroys them (45:24), and describes the Day when every community will be seen kneeling, which gives the sūrah its name, each called to its record (45:28). It ends in praise of Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth (45:36–37).
- Āyāt 1–11
Signs for those who believe
In the heavens and the earth, in people and animals, in night and day, rain and wind, are signs for those who believe and reason. Woe to every sinful liar who hears Allah’s āyāt and carries on in pride as if he had not heard them (45:7–8).
- Āyāt 12–15
All made of service
Allah made the sea serve people so ships sail by His command, and made all in the heavens and the earth of service to them (45:12–13). Believers are told to forgive those who do not hope for the days of Allah (45:14). Whoever does good does it for himself (45:15).
- Āyāt 16–20
A clear way
The Children of Israel were given the Book, judgement and prophethood, but they differed out of rivalry after knowledge came. Allah has set the Prophet on a clear way, so follow it and not the desires of those who do not know (45:18).
- Āyāt 21–26
Only time destroys us
Those who do evil will not be made like those who believe and do good (45:21). Some take their own desire as their god (45:23). They say there is only this life, and only time destroys them (45:24). Allah gives life, then death, then gathers all to the Day (45:26).
- Āyāt 27–37
Every community kneeling
On the Day, every community will be seen kneeling, called to its own record (45:28). Those who believed enter His mercy. The deniers are told they mocked Allah’s āyāt and were deceived by this world. All praise belongs to Allah, and His is the greatness in the heavens and the earth (45:36–37).
