What Sūrat ad-Dukhān is about
Sūrat ad-Dukhān has 59 āyāt in the twenty-fifth juzʼ. It opens with an oath by the clear Book, sent down on a blessed night in which every wise matter is made distinct (44:2–4). It is named after the smoke the sky will bring, covering people, when they will cry to have the punishment lifted (44:10–12).
The sūrah tells how Firʿawn’s (Pharaoh’s) people left behind gardens, springs and fine places, and neither heaven nor earth wept for them (44:25–29). It says the heavens and the earth were not created in play (44:38), describes the tree of Zaqqūm and the gardens of the mindful (44:43–57), and ends: Allah made the Qurʼān easy in the Prophet’s tongue so people may remember (44:58).
- Āyāt 1–8
A blessed night
By the clear Book, Allah sent it down on a blessed night, to warn. In that night every wise matter is made distinct by His command. It is a mercy from the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who gives life and death.
- Āyāt 9–16
The day of the smoke
The deniers play in doubt. Watch for the day the sky brings a visible smoke covering people (44:10–11). They will ask their Lord to lift the punishment and say they believe. It will be lifted a little, and they will return to their ways (44:15).
- Āyāt 17–33
Firʿawn’s people
A noble messenger came to Firʿawn’s people and asked them to hand over Allah’s servants. Mūsā (Moses) leads them out by night and leaves the sea still behind them (44:24). Firʿawn’s people leave gardens, springs and comforts, and neither heaven nor earth weeps for them (44:29). The Children of Israel are saved.
- Āyāt 34–42
Not created in play
The deniers say there is only their first death and they will not be raised. Are they better than the people of Tubbaʿ, who were destroyed (44:37)? The heavens and the earth were not created in play (44:38). The Day of Decision is the appointed time for all (44:40).
- Āyāt 43–59
Zaqqūm and the gardens
The tree of Zaqqūm is the food of the sinner, boiling in the belly like molten metal (44:43–46). The mindful are in a safe place, among gardens and springs, dressed in silk (44:51–53). The Qurʼān was made easy in the Prophet’s tongue so they may remember. So wait; they too are waiting (44:58–59).
