What Sūrat al-Aḥqāf is about
Sūrat al-Aḥqāf has 35 āyāt. It opens by saying the heavens and the earth were created in truth and for a set term (46:3), and asks those who call on others besides Allah to show what they created (46:4). The Prophet says he is nothing new among the messengers, and does not know what will be done with him or with them (46:9).
It asks people to be good to their parents, recalling a mother’s hardship in carrying and nursing her child (46:15). It is named after the sand dunes where the brother of ʿĀd warned his people (46:21). It tells of a group of jinn who listened to the Qurʼān and went back to warn their own people (46:29–32), and ends by telling the Prophet to be patient, as the messengers of firm resolve were patient (46:35).
- Āyāt 1–14
Nothing new among the messengers
The heavens and the earth were created in truth and for a set term. Those called on besides Allah created nothing and will not answer until the Day (46:5). The Prophet is nothing new among the messengers (46:9). Those who say “Our Lord is Allah” and stay firm will have no fear and no grief (46:13).
- Āyāt 15–20
Kindness to parents
A person is told to be good to parents: his mother carried him and gave birth to him in hardship, and bearing and weaning took thirty months. At forty he prays to be grateful for Allah’s favour on him and his parents (46:15). Another says “uff” to his parents and denies the raising (46:17).
- Āyāt 21–28
The brother of ʿĀd
The brother of ʿĀd warned his people among the sand dunes. When they saw a cloud coming to their valleys, they said it would bring rain. It was a wind carrying a painful punishment, destroying everything by its Lord’s command (46:24–25). Towns around were destroyed too.
- Āyāt 29–35
The jinn who listened
A group of jinn listen to the Qurʼān in silence, then go back to warn their people of a Book sent after Mūsā (Moses), guiding to the truth (46:29–30). The One who created the heavens and the earth can give life to the dead (46:33). Be patient, as the messengers of firm resolve were patient (46:35).
