What Sūrat al-Insān is about
Sūrat al-Insān has 31 āyāt in the twenty-ninth juzʼ. It opens by asking whether there came on the human a stretch of time when he was nothing worth mentioning (76:1). Allah created him from a mixed drop to test him, gave him hearing and sight, and showed him the way, grateful or ungrateful (76:2–3).
The sūrah describes the righteous, who keep their vows and give food, though they love it, to the poor, the orphan and the captive, saying they feed them only for Allah’s sake and want no reward or thanks (76:7–9). Their reward is a garden with silk, shade, silver vessels and a spring called Salsabīl (76:12–18). It ends: people will only if Allah wills (76:30).
- Āyāt 1–3
Grateful or ungrateful
There was a time when the human was nothing worth mentioning. Allah created him from a mixed drop to test him, and gave him hearing and sight. He showed him the way, whether he is grateful or ungrateful.
- Āyāt 4–22
For the sake of Allah
The righteous drink from a cup mixed with camphor. They keep their vows and fear a Day of widespread evil. They give food, though they love it, to the poor, the orphan and the captive, for Allah’s sake alone (76:8–9). Their reward is a garden of silk, with no burning sun or bitter cold, silver vessels and the spring of Salsabīl (76:18).
- Āyāt 23–31
Remember your Lord
Allah sent down the Qurʼān in stages. Be patient for your Lord’s decision, and do not obey the sinful or ungrateful. Remember your Lord morning and evening, and prostrate to Him at night (76:25–26). This is a reminder, and whoever wills takes a way to his Lord. You will only if Allah wills (76:29–30).
