What Sūrat al-Mursalāt is about
Sūrat al-Mursalāt has 50 āyāt in the twenty-ninth juzʼ. It opens with oaths by those sent forth one after another, which give the sūrah its name: what you are promised will surely come (77:1–7). It describes the stars put out, the sky split and the mountains blown away (77:8–10).
One āyah returns ten times, first at 77:15: woe that Day to the deniers. Between its returns, the sūrah points to the human made from a humble fluid (77:20), the earth that holds the living and the dead, and fresh water to drink (77:25–27). It contrasts the shadow of smoke that gives no shade (77:30–31) with the shade and springs of the mindful (77:41).
- Āyāt 1–15
What you are promised will come
By those sent forth one after another, those that storm and scatter, and those that bring a reminder, what you are promised will surely come. When the stars are put out, the sky is split and the mountains are blown away, and the messengers’ time is set, it is for the Day of Decision. Woe that Day to the deniers (77:15).
- Āyāt 16–28
Did We not?
Did Allah not destroy earlier peoples? Did He not create people from a humble fluid, kept in a safe place for a known term (77:20–22)? Did He not make the earth hold the living and the dead, and set high mountains in it, and give fresh water to drink (77:25–27)?
- Āyāt 29–40
A shadow that gives no shade
The deniers are told to go to what they denied: a shadow of smoke in three columns that gives no shade and no shelter from the flame (77:30–31). It throws sparks as large as palaces. That is a Day they will not speak, nor be allowed to make excuses (77:35–36).
- Āyāt 41–50
Shade and springs
The mindful are among shade and springs, with any fruit they wish: eat and drink in joy for what you did (77:41–43). When the deniers are told to bow, they do not bow (77:48). In what speech after this will they believe (77:50)?
