What Sūrat al-Humazah is about

Sūrat al-Humazah has 9 āyāt in the thirtieth juzʼ. It opens with woe to every slanderer and backbiter, which gives the sūrah its name (104:1). He gathers wealth and counts it, thinking his wealth will make him last forever (104:2–3).

The sūrah answers: no, he will be flung into al-Ḥuṭamah, the Crusher (104:4). It asks what will make you know what the Crusher is, then answers: Allah’s kindled fire, which rises over the hearts and is closed in on them in long columns (104:5–9).

What will make you know what al-Ḥuṭamah is? It is Allah’s kindled fire, which rises over the hearts. It is closed in on them, in long, outstretched columns.
