What Sūrat al-ʿAlaq is about
Sūrat al-ʿAlaq has 19 āyāt in the thirtieth juzʼ. It opens with a command: read, in the name of your Lord who created, who created the human from a clinging clot, which gives the sūrah its name (96:1–2). Your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught the human what he did not know (96:3–5).
The sūrah then warns that the human oversteps when he thinks himself self-sufficient, yet to his Lord is the return (96:6–8). It describes one who forbids a servant from praying, and asks whether he does not know that Allah sees (96:9–14). It ends: do not obey him, but prostrate and draw near (96:19).

Read in the name of your Lord
Read in the name of your Lord who created, who created the human from a clinging clot. Read, for your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught the human what he did not know.
- Āyāt 6–19
Prostrate and draw near
The human oversteps when he sees himself as self-sufficient, yet the return is to your Lord. One forbids a servant from praying; does he not know that Allah sees (96:14)? If he does not stop, he will be seized by the forelock. Do not obey him; prostrate and draw near (96:19).
