What Sūrat Muḥammad is about

Sūrat Muḥammad has 38 āyāt in the twenty-sixth juzʼ. It is named after its second āyah, which speaks of those who believe and do good and believe in what was sent down to Muḥammad, the truth from their Lord (47:2). Allah removes their bad deeds and sets their state right.

The sūrah gives rulings for fighting (47:4) and promises that if the believers help Allah’s cause He will help them and make their feet firm (47:7). It describes the rivers of the Garden: water, milk, wine and honey (47:15). It asks whether people do not reflect on the Qurʼān, or whether there are locks on their hearts (47:24), and warns that if they turn away Allah will bring another people in their place (47:38).

  1. Āyāt 1–6

    Deeds lost and deeds kept

Allah makes the deeds of those who disbelieve and block His way come to nothing. He removes the bad deeds of those who believe in what was sent to Muḥammad. Rulings are given for battle, captives and ransom. The deeds of those killed in Allah’s way are never lost (47:4).

  2. Āyāt 7–15

Help Allah, and He will help you

If the believers help Allah’s cause, He will help them and make their feet firm (47:7). Allah is the protector of those who believe (47:11). The Garden promised to the mindful has rivers of pure water, milk that never changes, wine that delights, and clear honey (47:15).

  3. Āyāt 16–31

    Locks on the hearts

Some listen to the Prophet and then ask what he just said. Know that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for your sins and for the believers (47:19). When fighting is mentioned, those with sick hearts look as if fainting at death (47:20). Do they not reflect on the Qurʼān (47:24)? Allah will test the believers (47:31).

  4. Āyāt 32–38

    Do not weaken

Obey Allah and the Messenger, and do not let your deeds go to waste (47:33). Do not weaken and call for peace when you have the upper hand and Allah is with you (47:35). This world is play and distraction. If you turn away, Allah will bring another people in your place (47:38).
