What Sūrat adh-Dhāriyāt is about

Sūrat adh-Dhāriyāt has 60 āyāt in the twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh juzʼ. It opens with an oath by the scattering winds, that what people are promised is true and the Judgement will come (51:1–6). The mindful slept little at night, asked forgiveness before dawn, and gave the beggar and the deprived a share of their wealth (51:17–19).

There are signs on the earth and within people themselves (51:20–21), and their provision is in the sky (51:22). The sūrah retells Ibrāhīm’s honoured guests and the end of Lūṭ’s town, Firʿawn, ʿĀd, Thamūd and Nūḥ’s people. It ends with the purpose of creation: Allah created jinn and humans only to worship Him (51:56).

  1. Āyāt 1–23

What you are promised is true

By the scattering winds, the promise is true and the Judgement will come. The mindful slept little at night and asked forgiveness before dawn, and the beggar and the deprived had a share in their wealth (51:17–19). There are signs on the earth and in yourselves; will you not see (51:21)? Your provision is in the sky (51:22).

  2. Āyāt 24–37

    Ibrāhīm’s honoured guests

Guests come to Ibrāhīm (Abraham), and he brings them a fat calf. They give him news of a knowing son, and his wife strikes her face in wonder. They are sent to a guilty people to rain stones of clay on them. Only one house of those who had submitted was found there (51:36).

  3. Āyāt 38–46

Signs in the peoples of old

Firʿawn (Pharaoh) turned away from Mūsā and was cast into the sea. ʿĀd were struck by a barren wind that left nothing. Thamūd were told to enjoy themselves for a while, and the thunderbolt seized them. Nūḥ’s people were defiantly disobedient before them.

  4. Āyāt 47–60

    Flee to Allah

Allah built the heaven with might and is expanding it (51:47). He spread the earth and created everything in pairs (51:49). So flee to Allah (51:50). He created jinn and humans only to worship Him, and wants no provision from them; Allah is the Provider (51:56–58).
