What Sūrat aṭ-Ṭūr is about

Sūrat aṭ-Ṭūr has 49 āyāt in the twenty-seventh juzʼ. It opens with oaths by the Mount, a Book written on open parchment, the House that is visited, the raised roof and the swelling sea: the punishment of your Lord will surely come (52:1–7). On that Day the sky will sway and the mountains move (52:9–10).

The mindful enjoy gardens, joined there by their descendants who followed them in faith (52:21). They recall that they used to fear among their families, and Allah was gracious to them (52:26–27). Then the sūrah asks the deniers a string of questions: were they created from nothing, or are they the creators (52:35)? It ends by telling the Prophet to wait patiently, for he is in Allah’s sight (52:48).

  1. Āyāt 1–16

    By the Mount

By the Mount, the written Book, the visited House, the raised roof and the swelling sea, the punishment of your Lord will come and none can stop it (52:7–8). On that Day the sky sways and the mountains move. The deniers are told to enter the Fire they used to call magic.

  2. Āyāt 17–28

    Families joined in the Garden

The mindful are in gardens and bliss. Their descendants who followed them in faith are joined with them (52:21). They pass a cup with no idle talk or sin in it. They say they used to fear among their families, and Allah was gracious to them and saved them (52:26–27).

  3. Āyāt 29–49

    Were they created from nothing?

The Prophet is no soothsayer, madman or poet. Were the deniers created from nothing, or are they the creators (52:35)? Did they create the heavens and the earth? Do they hold Allah’s treasures? Wait patiently for your Lord’s decision, for you are in Our sight, and glorify Him at night and as the stars fade (52:48–49).
