What Sūrat ash-Shūrā is about
Sūrat ash-Shūrā has 53 āyāt in the twenty-fifth juzʼ. It opens by saying Allah reveals to the Prophet as He revealed to those before him (42:3). There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing (42:11). He ordained for the believers the same religion He gave Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā and ʿĪsā: keep to it and do not split apart (42:13).
It is named after consultation: the believers settle their affairs by consulting among themselves (42:38). They avoid great sins, forgive when angry, and answer their Lord. A wrong may be repaid in like, but whoever pardons and makes peace has his reward with Allah (42:40). The sūrah ends with the ways Allah speaks to a human (42:51) and the straight path (42:52–53).
- Āyāt 1–12
Nothing is like Him
Allah reveals to the Prophet as He did to those before him. The heavens almost break apart from above, while the angels glorify their Lord and ask forgiveness for those on earth (42:5). The Qurʼān is sent in Arabic to warn the Mother of Towns. There is nothing like Allah (42:11).
- Āyāt 13–26
One religion for all the prophets
Allah ordained the religion He enjoined on Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā and ʿĪsā: establish it and do not divide (42:13). The Prophet is told to call to it and stand firm as commanded (42:15). Allah is gentle with His servants (42:19). He accepts repentance and pardons bad deeds (42:25).
- Āyāt 27–35
Rain after despair
If Allah gave provision without limit, people would transgress, so He sends it in measure. He sends rain after people have despaired (42:28). Whatever hardship strikes is from what hands have earned, and He pardons much (42:30). Ships like mountains sail by His command.
- Āyāt 36–43
The way of the believers
What is with Allah is better and lasting for those who believe and rely on their Lord. They avoid great sins, forgive when angry, pray, and consult among themselves (42:37–38). A wrong may be repaid by its like, but whoever pardons and makes peace is rewarded by Allah (42:40). Patience and forgiveness show true resolve (42:43).
- Āyāt 44–53
How Allah speaks to a human
Answer your Lord before a Day that cannot be turned back (42:47). Allah gives daughters, sons, both, or none, as He wills (42:49–50). He speaks to a human only by revelation, from behind a veil, or through a messenger (42:51). He revealed to the Prophet a spirit by His command, a light to guide (42:52).
