What Sūrat an-Naḥl is about
Sūrat an-Naḥl has 128 āyāt in the fourteenth juzʼ. It opens by saying that Allah’s command is coming (16:1), then lists His gifts one after another: cattle for warmth and food, horses to ride, rain, crops, the sea and its fish, stars to steer by. If people counted Allah’s blessings they could not number them (16:18).
It is named after the bee, which Allah inspired to build its homes, and from which comes a drink of many colours with healing for people (16:68–69). The sūrah also says that Allah commands justice, doing good and giving to relatives (16:90), and asks the Prophet to call to his Lord’s way with wisdom and good teaching (16:125).
- Āyāt 1–21
Blessings past counting
Allah sends angels with revelation to whom He wills. He created people from a drop, and gave them cattle, horses, rain, crops and the sea. Mountains steady the earth, and stars guide travellers. Those they call on besides Allah create nothing (16:20).
- Āyāt 22–50
Messengers to every nation
The proud call the revelation tales of the ancients (16:24). Every nation was sent a messenger to say: worship Allah and avoid false gods (16:36). Those who emigrated for Allah after being wronged are promised a good home (16:41). Everything in the heavens and the earth bows to Allah (16:49).
- Āyāt 51–76
The bee and other signs
Allah is one God. The idolaters give Him daughters and grieve when a daughter is born to them (16:57–59). From cattle comes pure milk (16:66), from dates and grapes provision (16:67), and from the bee a healing drink (16:68–69). Two parables compare the helpless with one who commands justice (16:75–76).
- Āyāt 77–100
Justice, oaths and a good life
Allah gave people homes, shade and clothing. On the Day a witness will be raised from every nation (16:84). Allah commands justice and doing good, and forbids indecency and oppression (16:90). Do not break oaths (16:91). Whoever does good with faith is given a good life (16:97). Seek refuge with Allah before reciting the Qurʼān (16:98).
- Āyāt 101–128
The way of Ibrāhīm, and wisdom
The holy spirit brought the Qurʼān down in truth (16:102). One forced to deny with words while his heart is at rest in faith is excused (16:106). Ibrāhīm (Abraham) was a nation in himself, devoted to Allah (16:120). Call to your Lord’s way with wisdom and good teaching (16:125), and be patient (16:127).
