What Sūrat al-Ḥijr is about
Sūrat al-Ḥijr opens the fourteenth juzʼ and has 99 āyāt. It begins with the āyāt of the Book and a clear Qurʼān (15:1), and says Allah has sent down the Reminder and will guard it (15:9). It describes the constellations of the sky and the winds that bring the rain (15:16–22).
It tells how Iblīs refused to bow to the human made from clay (15:26–35), and how angels came to Ibrāhīm and then to Lūṭ (15:51–77). It is named after the people of al-Ḥijr, who carved their homes from the mountains and denied the messengers (15:80–84). The Prophet is told to declare what he is commanded and to worship his Lord until certainty comes (15:94–99).
- Āyāt 1–15
The Reminder, guarded
The disbelievers will one day wish they had submitted. They mock the Prophet and ask for angels. Allah sent down the Reminder and will guard it (15:9). Even through a gate opened in the sky, they would say their eyes were deceived (15:14–15).
- Āyāt 16–25
Constellations, winds and rain
Allah placed constellations in the sky and guarded them from every devil. He spread the earth, set mountains in it, and grew everything in measure. He sends the winds to fertilise and brings down water. He gives life and death, and He inherits all.
- Āyāt 26–48
Clay, fire and Iblīs
Allah created the human from sounding clay, and the jinn before from fire. Iblīs refuses to bow, is given respite, and vows to mislead people. He has no power over Allah’s sincere servants (15:42). Hell has seven gates (15:44), and the mindful will be in gardens, as brothers facing one another.
- Āyāt 49–77
Ibrāhīm’s guests and Lūṭ
Allah is the Forgiving, and His punishment is painful (15:49–50). Guests bring Ibrāhīm (Abraham) news of a son. They then go to Lūṭ (Lot), whose people rush to them. Lūṭ’s family leaves by night, and the town is turned upside down.
- Āyāt 78–86
The thicket and al-Ḥijr
The people of the thicket were wrongdoers and were punished. The people of al-Ḥijr denied the messengers, carved safe homes from the mountains, and were seized by the blast in the morning. The heavens and the earth were created in truth, so forgive graciously (15:85).
- Āyāt 87–99
Seven oft-repeated, and the great Qurʼān
The Prophet has been given seven of the oft-repeated and the great Qurʼān (15:87). He is told not to look longingly at what others enjoy, to declare what he is commanded, and to worship his Lord until certainty comes to him (15:99).
