What Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah is about
Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah has 96 āyāt in the twenty-seventh juzʼ. It opens with the Event that will surely come, bringing some low and raising others high (56:1–3). When it comes, people will be in three groups: the foremost, brought near to Allah; the companions of the right; and the companions of the left (56:7–11).
The sūrah describes each group’s end in turn. Then it asks people about what is in front of them: the seed they sow, the water they drink, the fire they kindle, and who truly brings each one about (56:63–72). It swears by the setting of the stars that this is a noble Qurʼān (56:75–77), and ends with the moment the soul reaches the throat (56:83) and a call to glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great (56:96).
- Āyāt 1–12
Three groups
When the Event comes, no one will deny it. It will bring some low and raise others high. The earth will be shaken and the mountains crumble to dust. People will be three groups: the companions of the right, the companions of the left, and the foremost, who are brought near (56:10–11).
- Āyāt 13–26
The foremost
They are many from earlier generations and few from later ones. They recline on woven couches, served by youths with cups from a flowing spring, fruit and the meat of birds. With them are companions like hidden pearls (56:22–23). They hear no idle talk, only: peace, peace (56:26).
- Āyāt 27–40
The companions of the right
The companions of the right are among thornless lote trees, trees layered with fruit, extended shade, flowing water and fruit that never runs out (56:28–33). Their companions are made new for them, loving and of equal age. They are many from earlier generations and many from later ones (56:39–40).
- Āyāt 41–56
The companions of the left
The companions of the left are in scorching wind, boiling water and the shade of black smoke (56:42–43). They lived in luxury and persisted in great sin, and asked how they could be raised as bones and dust. They will eat from the tree of Zaqqūm and drink like thirsty camels (56:52–55).
- Āyāt 57–74
The seed, the water and the fire
Allah created people, so why do they not believe? Do they create the fluid they emit, or does He (56:58–59)? The seed they sow, the water they drink, the fire they kindle: is it they who make them, or Allah (56:63–72)? So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great (56:74).
- Āyāt 75–96
A noble Qurʼān, and the last moment
By the setting of the stars, a mighty oath, this is a noble Qurʼān in a guarded Book, which only the purified touch (56:75–79). When the soul reaches the throat, no one can return it (56:83–87). Then come rest and a garden for those brought near, peace for the right, and fire for the deniers. This is the certain truth (56:95).
