What Sūrat al-Ḥadīd is about
Sūrat al-Ḥadīd has 29 āyāt in the twenty-seventh juzʼ. It opens with everything in the heavens and the earth glorifying Allah (57:1). He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden (57:3), and He is with people wherever they are (57:4).
The sūrah calls the believers to believe and spend (57:7), and asks whether the time has not come for their hearts to be humbled at Allah’s remembrance (57:16). It describes this world as play, display and rivalry in wealth and children, like plants that flourish and then dry up (57:20). It is named after iron, which Allah sent down with great strength and benefits for people (57:25).
- Āyāt 1–6
The First and the Last
Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah. He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He knows all things (57:3). He created the heavens and the earth in six days, and He is with you wherever you are (57:4).
- Āyāt 7–15
Spend, and the light on that Day
Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and spend from what He has entrusted to you (57:7). Those who spent and fought before the victory are higher in rank (57:10). Who will lend Allah a good loan (57:11)? On the Day, the believers’ light runs before them, and the hypocrites ask to borrow some of it (57:12–13).
- Āyāt 16–19
Has the time not come?
Has the time not come for the believers’ hearts to be humbled at Allah’s remembrance and the truth sent down (57:16)? Do not be like those whose hearts hardened over time. Allah gives life to the earth after its death. Those who give charity will be repaid many times over (57:18).
- Āyāt 20–24
This world is play
This world is play, distraction, display, boasting and rivalry in wealth and children, like rain whose plants please the farmers and then dry up (57:20). Race to forgiveness and a Garden as wide as the heavens and the earth (57:21). Every hardship is written before it happens, so do not despair over losses or exult over gains (57:22–23).
- Āyāt 25–29
The balance and iron
Allah sent messengers with clear signs, the Book and the balance so that people would uphold justice, and He sent down iron with great strength and benefits (57:25). He sent Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm and ʿĪsā (Jesus), and put compassion and mercy in the hearts of ʿĪsā’s followers (57:27). Believers are promised a double share of His mercy and a light to walk by (57:28).
