What Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn is about

Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn has 36 āyāt in the thirtieth juzʼ. It opens with woe to those who cheat in measure: they take full measure from others but give less when they measure for them (83:1–3). Do they not think they will be raised for a mighty Day, when people stand before the Lord of the worlds (83:4–6)?

The record of the wicked is in Sijjīn, and the record of the righteous in ʿIlliyyīn (83:7–20). The deniers’ hearts are stained by what they earned (83:14). The righteous sit on couches looking on, with the glow of bliss on their faces, drinking a sealed drink whose seal is musk: for this let the competitors compete (83:22–26). The sūrah ends with those who once laughed at the believers (83:29–36).

  1. Āyāt 1–6

    Woe to those who cheat

Woe to those who give short measure, who take full measure from people but give less when they measure or weigh for them. Do they not think they will be raised for a mighty Day, when people stand before the Lord of the worlds?

  2. Āyāt 7–17

    Sijjīn, and stained hearts

The record of the wicked is in Sijjīn, a written register. Woe that Day to the deniers. When the āyāt are recited, the denier calls them old tales. No, their hearts are stained by what they earned (83:14). That Day they will be screened from their Lord (83:15).

  3. Āyāt 18–28

    ʿIlliyyīn, and the sealed drink

The record of the righteous is in ʿIlliyyīn, witnessed by those brought near. The righteous recline on couches, looking on, the glow of bliss on their faces. They drink a sealed drink whose seal is musk, mixed from Tasnīm, a spring that those brought near drink from. For this let the competitors compete (83:26).

  4. Āyāt 29–36

    Who laughs last

The guilty used to laugh at the believers, wink at each other as they passed, and call them misguided. They were not sent as guardians over them. On that Day the believers laugh at the disbelievers, from couches, looking on (83:34–35).
