What Sūrat al-Māʿūn is about

Sūrat al-Māʿūn has 7 āyāt in the thirtieth juzʼ. It opens by asking whether you have seen the one who denies the Judgement (107:1). That is the one who pushes the orphan away and does not urge the feeding of the poor (107:2–3).

Then it warns those who pray yet are heedless of their prayer, who only want to be seen (107:4–6). It ends with those who hold back small kindnesses, al-māʿūn, which give the sūrah its name (107:7). In seven short āyāt it ties denying the Judgement to neglect of the orphan and the poor.

  1. Āyāt 1–3

The one who denies the Judgement

Have you seen the one who denies the Judgement? He is the one who pushes the orphan away and does not urge others to feed the poor.

  2. Āyāt 4–7

    Heedless of their prayer

Woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer, who do things only to be seen, and who hold back even small acts of help.
