What Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt is about
Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt has 18 āyāt in the twenty-sixth juzʼ. It teaches the believers good manners with Allah’s Messenger: not to put themselves before Allah and His Messenger, nor raise their voices above the Prophet’s (49:1–2). It is named after the private rooms from behind which some called out to him (49:4).
The sūrah then teaches manners among believers: check news brought by a wrongdoer (49:6), make peace between believers who fight, for they are brothers (49:9–10), and do not mock, spy or backbite (49:11–12). People were made nations and tribes to know one another, and the most honoured with Allah are the most mindful (49:13).
- Āyāt 1–5
Before Allah and His Messenger
Believers must not put themselves before Allah and His Messenger, nor raise their voices above the Prophet’s, lest their deeds be lost (49:2). Those who lower their voices before him have hearts tested for mindfulness. Those who called to him from behind the private rooms should have waited for him to come out.
- Āyāt 6–10
Check the news; make peace
If a wrongdoer brings news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance (49:6). If two groups of believers fight, make peace between them, and act justly (49:9). The believers are brothers, so make peace between your brothers (49:10).
- Āyāt 11–13
Do not mock, spy or backbite
Do not mock one another or call each other by insulting names. Avoid much suspicion, do not spy, and do not backbite; it is like eating a dead brother’s flesh (49:12). People were made into nations and tribes to know one another, and the most honoured with Allah are the most mindful (49:13).
- Āyāt 14–18
Faith in the heart
Bedouins say they believe; they are told to say they have submitted, for faith has not yet entered their hearts (49:14). The true believers believe in Allah and His Messenger without doubt, and strive with their wealth and themselves (49:15). Their Islam is not a favour to the Prophet; Allah favoured them by guiding them (49:17).
