What Sūrat al-Ḥajj is about
Sūrat al-Ḥajj has 78 āyāt in the seventeenth juzʼ. It opens with the quake of the Hour, so terrible that a nursing mother forgets the child she nurses (22:1–2). It describes how a human grows in the womb, and how dead earth stirs to life with rain, as signs of the raising of the dead (22:5).
It is named after the pilgrimage. Ibrāhīm (Abraham) was shown the place of the House and told to call people to the Ḥajj (22:26–27). Neither the meat nor the blood of the sacrifices reaches Allah; what reaches Him is mindfulness (22:37). The sūrah gives permission to fight to those who were wronged (22:39), and ends by calling the believers to bow, prostrate and strive, in the faith of their father Ibrāhīm (22:77–78).
- Āyāt 1–24
The quake of the Hour
The quake of the Hour is a tremendous thing. A human is created from dust, then a drop, a clinging clot and a lump, and the dead earth comes alive after rain (22:5). Some worship Allah on an edge, ready to turn away (22:11). Everything in the heavens and the earth prostrates to Allah (22:18).
- Āyāt 25–37
The House and the pilgrimage
Ibrāhīm was shown the place of the House and told to keep it pure for those who circle it and pray (22:26). People will come to the Ḥajj on foot and on lean camels from every distant pass (22:27). The sacrifices are among Allah’s rites, and only mindfulness reaches Him (22:37).
- Āyāt 38–57
Permission to those wronged
Allah defends those who believe. Permission to fight is given to those who were wronged and driven from their homes only for saying “Our Lord is Allah” (22:39–40). It is not the eyes that go blind but the hearts within the chests (22:46). A day with your Lord is like a thousand years of your counting (22:47).
- Āyāt 58–78
A fly, and the faith of Ibrāhīm
Those who emigrated for Allah and were killed or died will be given good provision (22:58). If all they call upon gathered together, they could not create a fly (22:73). Believers are told to bow, prostrate, worship and do good (22:77). Allah named them Muslims, in the faith of their father Ibrāhīm (22:78).
