What Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ is about
Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ has 112 āyāt in the seventeenth juzʼ. It opens with a warning: people’s reckoning has drawn near while they turn away, heedless (21:1). The heavens and the earth were not made for play (21:16), and every living thing was made from water (21:30).
It is named after the prophets, and names many of them in turn: Mūsā (Moses) and Hārūn, Ibrāhīm (Abraham), who broke the idols and was kept safe in the fire (21:51–70), Lūṭ, Nūḥ, Dāwūd and Sulaymān, Ayyūb, Ismāʿīl, Idrīs, Dhū al-Kifl, Dhū an-Nūn, Zakariyyā and Yaḥyā (21:48–90). The Prophet was sent only as a mercy to the worlds (21:107).
- Āyāt 1–29
Reckoning drawn near
People’s reckoning has come near, yet they listen while they play. They call the revelation muddled dreams and ask for a sign. Many wrongdoing towns were destroyed. The heavens and the earth were not made for play (21:16). If there were other gods in them, both would have fallen into ruin (21:22).
- Āyāt 30–47
Every living thing from water
The heavens and the earth were once joined, and Allah parted them, and He made every living thing from water (21:30). The sky is a protected roof. Every soul will taste death, and people are tested with bad and good (21:35). The scales of justice will be set up, and no soul will be wronged (21:47).
- Āyāt 48–77
Ibrāhīm and the idols
Mūsā and Hārūn were given the Criterion. Ibrāhīm breaks his people’s idols, leaving the biggest, and tells them to ask the idols if they can speak (21:58–63). They throw him into a fire, and Allah makes it cool and safe for him (21:69). Lūṭ, Isḥāq, Yaʿqūb and Nūḥ are rescued and guided.
- Āyāt 78–91
Prophets who called on their Lord
Dāwūd (David) and Sulaymān (Solomon) judge a case about a field, and the mountains and birds glorify with Dāwūd. Ayyūb (Job) calls out in his hardship, and it is lifted (21:83–84). Dhū an-Nūn calls from the darkness that there is no god but Allah, and is saved (21:87–88). Zakariyyā is given Yaḥyā, and Maryam and her son are made a sign (21:91).
- Āyāt 92–112
One community, and a mercy to the worlds
This community is one, and Allah is its Lord (21:92). Yaʾjūj and Maʾjūj will be let loose before the true promise comes. The heavens will be rolled up like a written scroll (21:104). The righteous will inherit the earth (21:105). The Prophet was sent only as a mercy to the worlds (21:107).
