What Sūrat al-Burūj is about
Sūrat al-Burūj has 22 āyāt in the thirtieth juzʼ. It opens with an oath by the sky with its constellations, which give the sūrah its name, and by the promised Day (85:1–3). It tells of the people of the trench, who sat by a fire and watched what they did to the believers (85:4–7).
They held nothing against the believers except that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy (85:8). The sūrah says those who persecute believing men and women and do not repent will have the punishment of Hell (85:10). Allah is the Forgiving, the Loving, Lord of the glorious Throne, who does what He wills (85:14–16). It ends: this is a glorious Qurʼān in a guarded Tablet (85:21–22).
- Āyāt 1–11
The people of the trench
By the sky with its constellations and the promised Day, the people of the trench were destroyed. They sat by a fire full of fuel, watching what they did to the believers. Their only grudge was that the believers believed in Allah (85:8). Those who persecute believers and do not repent face Hell, and the believers have gardens (85:10–11).
- Āyāt 12–22
The Forgiving, the Loving
Your Lord’s grip is severe. He begins creation and repeats it. He is the Forgiving, the Loving, Lord of the glorious Throne, doing whatever He wills (85:14–16). Recall the armies of Firʿawn (Pharaoh) and Thamūd. This is a glorious Qurʼān, in a guarded Tablet (85:21–22).
