What Sūrat an-Nisāʾ is about
Sūrat an-Nisāʾ, “The Women”, has 176 āyāt across the fourth to sixth juzʼ. It begins by reminding all people that they were created from a single soul, and tells them to be mindful of Allah and of the ties of kinship (4:1). Much of it protects those who could be wronged: orphans, women and the weak.
It sets out shares of inheritance (4:11–12), the rights of wives, and whom one may not marry (4:22–24). It commands that trusts be returned and judgement be just (4:58), and asks believers to stand firm for justice even against themselves (4:135). It also speaks of fighting, of hypocrisy, of the People of the Book and of ʿĪsā (Jesus), and ends with a ruling on inheritance (4:176).
- Āyāt 1–14
One soul, orphans and inheritance
People were created from one soul, so they are told to be mindful of Allah and of kinship. Orphans’ wealth must be handed over honestly, and women must be given their dowries. Allah sets the shares of inheritance for children, parents, spouses and siblings, and these are His limits (4:13–14).
- Āyāt 15–43
Marriage, family and the prayer
Rulings follow on indecency, repentance and the fair treatment of wives (4:19). The women one may not marry are listed (4:23). Allah wants to lighten things for people, who were created weak (4:28). Believers are told to serve Allah, be good to parents and neighbours (4:36), and not to come to prayer intoxicated (4:43).
- Āyāt 44–70
Trusts, justice and obedience
Those given part of the Book who trade it for error are described. Allah does not forgive that partners be set up with Him, and forgives anything less for whom He wills (4:48). Trusts must be returned and judgement be just (4:58). Believers obey Allah, the Messenger and those in authority, and refer disputes to Allah and the Messenger (4:59).
- Āyāt 71–104
Fighting, hypocrisy and emigration
Believers are told to take precautions and to fight for the oppressed men, women and children (4:75). Death will reach people even in high towers (4:78). The hypocrites are exposed, the penalty for killing a believer is set out (4:92–93), those who could have emigrated are questioned (4:97), and the prayer may be shortened in danger (4:101–102).
- Āyāt 105–134
Fair judgement, and peace in marriage
The Prophet is told to judge by what Allah has shown him and not to plead for those who betray. Shayṭān promises only delusion (4:120). None is better in religion than one who submits to Allah, does good and follows the way of Ibrāhīm (4:125). Spouses are urged towards reconciliation, for peace is better (4:128).
- Āyāt 135–152
Standing firm for justice
Believers must stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah, even against themselves, their parents or relatives (4:135). The hypocrites, who waver between belief and disbelief, will be in the lowest depth of the Fire (4:145). Those who believe in Allah and all His messengers without distinction are promised their reward (4:152).
- Āyāt 153–176
The People of the Book and ʿĪsā
The People of the Book are reminded of broken covenants. ʿĪsā was not killed or crucified; Allah raised him to Himself (4:157–158). Revelation came to the Prophet as it came to Nūḥ (Noah) and the prophets after him (4:163). People are told not to say “three” (4:171). The sūrah ends with a ruling on inheritance (4:176).
