What Sūrat al-Qamar is about

Sūrat al-Qamar has 55 āyāt in the twenty-seventh juzʼ. It opens: the Hour has drawn near and the moon has split (54:1). Yet when the deniers see a sign they turn away and call it passing magic (54:2). It describes them coming out of their graves on the Day like scattered locusts (54:7).

The sūrah then tells of Nūḥ, ʿĀd, Thamūd, Lūṭ’s people and Firʿawn’s people, each denying and each punished. Through it runs one āyah: Allah has made the Qurʼān easy to remember, so is there anyone who will remember (54:17)? It ends with the mindful among gardens and rivers, in a seat of truth near a Sovereign, All-Powerful (54:54–55).

  1. Āyāt 1–8

    The moon has split

The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split. The deniers call every sign passing magic and follow their desires. On the Day they come out of their graves with downcast eyes, like scattered locusts, hurrying to the caller (54:7–8).

  2. Āyāt 9–17

    Nūḥ and the ark

Nūḥ’s people called him mad, and he called to his Lord that he was overcome. The gates of the sky opened with pouring water, and the earth burst with springs. Nūḥ was carried on a vessel of planks and nails (54:13). Allah has made the Qurʼān easy to remember; will anyone remember (54:17)?

  3. Āyāt 18–22

    ʿĀd

ʿĀd denied, and a screaming wind was sent on them on a day of continuous misfortune. It tore people away as if they were uprooted palm trunks (54:20). The Qurʼān is made easy to remember.

  4. Āyāt 23–32

    Thamūd and the she-camel

Thamūd asked whether they should follow one human from among themselves. The she-camel was sent as a test, and the water was to be shared. They called their companion, who struck and hamstrung her. A single blast left them like dry stubble (54:31).

  5. Āyāt 33–40

    Lūṭ’s people

Lūṭ’s (Lot’s) people denied the warnings. A storm of stones was sent on them, except Lūṭ’s family, who were saved before dawn as a favour from Allah (54:34–35). They tried to take his guests, and their eyes were blinded.

  6. Āyāt 41–55

    Everything by measure

Firʿawn’s (Pharaoh’s) people denied all the signs and were seized. Allah created everything by measure (54:49), and His command is a single word, like the blink of an eye (54:50). Every deed is recorded. The mindful are among gardens and rivers, in a seat of truth near a Sovereign, All-Powerful (54:54–55).
