What Sūrat al-Kahf is about
Sūrat al-Kahf has 110 āyāt in the fifteenth and sixteenth juzʼ. It opens in praise of Allah, who sent down the Book with no crookedness in it (18:1). It is named after the cave where a group of young believers took refuge and slept for many years (18:9–26).
The sūrah tells four stories: the people of the cave, a man proud of his two gardens (18:32–44), Mūsā (Moses) and a servant of Allah given knowledge from Him (18:60–82), and Dhū al-Qarnayn, who builds a barrier against Yaʾjūj and Maʾjūj (18:83–98). Around them it reminds that what is on the earth is adornment, given as a test (18:7). It ends: whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do good and worship Him alone (18:110).
- Āyāt 1–8
A Book with no crookedness
Allah sent down the Book straight, to warn and to give good news. Those who say Allah has taken a son have no knowledge of it (18:4–5). The Prophet should not grieve himself to death over them. What is on the earth is adornment, to test who does best (18:7).
- Āyāt 9–26
The people of the cave
Young believers leave their people and shelter in a cave, and Allah makes them sleep. When they wake, one goes to the city with their coins. People argue over their number, but Allah knows it best. Never say you will do something tomorrow without adding “if Allah wills” (18:23–24).
- Āyāt 27–44
Patience with the believers; two gardens
The Prophet is told to stay patient with those who call on their Lord morning and evening (18:28). The truth is from your Lord; whoever wills may believe (18:29). A man proud of his two gardens says they will never perish, and his believing companion warns him. His fruit is destroyed (18:42).
- Āyāt 45–59
This world, the record and Iblīs
This world’s life is like rain on plants that soon become dry stalks (18:45). Wealth and children are its adornment, and lasting good deeds are better (18:46). On the Day the record is placed and leaves nothing out (18:49). Iblīs refused to bow, yet people take him and his offspring as protectors (18:50).
- Āyāt 60–82
Mūsā and the servant of Allah
Mūsā travels to the meeting of the two seas and finds a servant whom Allah had given knowledge. He follows him, but cannot keep silent when the man damages a boat, kills a boy and rebuilds a wall without pay. The man then explains each act.
- Āyāt 83–98
Dhū al-Qarnayn
Dhū al-Qarnayn is given power and the means to travel. He reaches the setting of the sun and its rising, and deals justly with the people he finds. Between two mountains he builds a barrier of iron and copper against Yaʾjūj and Maʾjūj (Gog and Magog), and says it is a mercy from his Lord (18:98).
- Āyāt 99–110
Those whose deeds are lost
The trumpet is blown and Hell is shown to those who would not hear. The greatest losers are those whose work was lost while they thought they did well (18:103–104). If the sea were ink, Allah’s words would not run out (18:109). The Prophet is a human to whom it is revealed that your God is One (18:110).
