What Sūrat al-Balad is about

Sūrat al-Balad has 20 āyāt in the thirtieth juzʼ. It opens with an oath by this city, which gives the sūrah its name (90:1). The human was created in toil (90:4), yet thinks no one has power over him, and boasts of the wealth he has spent (90:5–6).

The sūrah reminds him that he was given two eyes, a tongue and two lips, and shown the two paths (90:8–10). Then it names the steep path he has not taken: freeing a slave, feeding an orphan relative or a poor person in the dust on a day of hunger, then being among those who believe and urge one another to patience and mercy (90:11–17).

  1. Āyāt 1–10

    Two eyes and two paths

By this city, and by a parent and the child he fathered, the human was created in toil. Does he think no one has power over him? He boasts of the wealth he has spent. Did Allah not give him two eyes, a tongue and two lips, and show him the two paths (90:8–10)?

  2. Āyāt 11–20

    The steep path

He has not taken the steep path: freeing a slave, or feeding on a day of hunger an orphan relative or a poor person in the dust. Then being among those who believe and urge one another to patience and mercy (90:17). They are the people of the right; the deniers are the people of the left, under a closed-in fire.
